What is Innovation?
Innovation refers to something new or a change made to an existing product, idea or field. Innovative works are inevitable for teachers to elevate the student's interest and understanding in learning. It is always better to learn new things rather than conventional classes. As a teacher, it is his or her to be always updated in his or her field and deliver the content in an innovative way. The teacher can use various methods to bring innovations in teaching using images, models, video etc. An innovative work makes the teaching- learning process easy and meaningful.
About my Innovative Work
Whenever we hear the term 'grammar' or try to internalise the concept be it a student or a teacher all sorts of worries, inhibitions and like tend to arise as to where or how to process it. So thinking of a better way to transact a part of speech in grammar itself calls for innovation. My innovative work is a three part 'Flip Fan and Wheel' model based on the concept 'Conjunction'. It works or is based on the concept attainment model in association with levels of cognitive domain proposed by Bloom. This work is an attempt to provide a clearer and deeper understanding of the topic of study in an interestingly innovative way.
Flip , Fan and Wheel' Model
Flip
To introduce the concept 'Conjunction' firstly the students should hear about the term , it's definition, types and nature. How interestingly can it be done? Yes it can be done interestingly through a flip model . When the tip of the chart stick is pulled the cards flip revealing the term conjunction, it's definition, types and examples for each type. Thus by flipping the chart cards interestingly they also get familiarised with the topic.
The second part of the model is the Conjunction Fan. Here using a chart and certain cards, I made the distinction between the types of conjunctions. Each section is for each type - coordinating conjunction, subordinating conjunction and correlative conjunctions. The leaves of the fan carries the examples of each type. By the side of each fan I have also placed a portion where the teacher could stick 'n' number of sentences and check the comprehension of the students. This is made innovative and interesting in the sense that students could come forward and turn the leaf of the fan until they reach the right answer and by doing this it adds to their knowledge as well as stands as a fun activity too. Here the lower order thinking skills or the lowest levels of cognitive domain works that is remembering, understanding and applying.
Wheel
The third and final part of my model is the Conjunction Wheel. Here I have used a cardboard and turned it into a spinning wheel where I have written the types of conjunction and certain examples. The student or learner has to turn the wheel until the right type of conjunction matches with its example. At this level the learner analyse, evaluate and creatively engage in getting the concept 'Conjunction'.
Thus the whole work is set strongly based on the growth of the thinking processes of the learner. After completing the three parts , the learner not only get an understanding of the concept but he or she could actively construct correct sentences involving conjunctions in English.
Simply put innovation is about successfully implementing a new idea and creating a valueable outcome of it. Through this innovative work, I strongly believe that I have created a positive outcome by making the learning of grammar interesting and enriching.
Conclusion
Grammar when taught interestingly by giving clear instances of its usage, proper exercises to practise and sentence construction activities involving correct usage makes it more appealing and welcoming to students or learners of any age. Having a sound grammatical base is essential in building a good command in English language. Thus looking for innovative ideas in transacting any part of grammar is a better move towards helping students. Therefore, I feel contended in coming up with an innovative work based on a concept in grammar and in successfully implementing the same.
